Filter flow estimate
Use real water volume if you know it. Manufacturer filter ratings can be optimistic, so choose a loss setting that matches media, hoses, sponge prefilters, and clogging.
This is a planning aid. Some fish prefer calmer water, and filter media capacity, oxygen exchange, and maintenance matter as much as raw flow.
How to size aquarium filter flow
Filter flow is often discussed as turnover per hour: how many times the tank volume moves through the filter in one hour. A calm community tank may start around 4x to 6x turnover, while planted tanks and high bioload aquariums may need stronger circulation or better filter capacity. Sensitive fish and shrimp may need gentler output spread through a spray bar, sponge filter, or adjusted outlet.
Aquarium filter flow FAQ
How much filter flow does a freshwater aquarium need?
Many freshwater aquariums use about 4x to 6x tank volume per hour as a starting point. The right answer depends on fish, feeding, plants, filter media, and how the outlet spreads flow.
Can aquarium filter flow be too strong?
Yes. Strong direct flow can stress gentle fish or shrimp. You can reduce current with a spray bar, sponge prefilter, outlet direction, hardscape, plants, or a lower-flow filter.
Why is real filter flow lower than the box rating?
Filter ratings are often tested without full media, hose height, clogging, or accessories. Real output may be 50% to 85% of the advertised number.
