Water plus every component

Aquarium Weight Calculator

Estimate the filled weight of your fish tank in kilograms and pounds.

Add measured component weights for the most useful result. This planning estimate does not approve a floor, stand, cabinet or installation.

Build your weight estimate

Use actual water volume after substrate and hardscape displacement when possible.

What counts toward aquarium weight?

Water is usually the largest part, but the empty tank, substrate, rock, wood, filters, sump contents and stand all add static weight.

  1. Start with water

Multiply actual water volume by the editable water density.

  2. Add tank contents

Enter measured weights for the tank, substrate, hardscape and equipment.

  3. Add the stand

Keep the tank subtotal separate, then include the stand for a whole-system estimate.

water weight = volume × density
tank and contents = water + empty tank + substrate + hardscape + equipment
whole system = tank and contents + stand

Worked example: a 54 L aquarium

For freshwater, 54 L of water is about 54 kg. Add a 12 kg empty tank, 15 kg of substrate, 8 kg of hardscape and 3 kg of equipment for a 92 kg tank-and-contents subtotal. A 20 kg stand brings the whole system to 112 kg.

54 + 12 + 15 + 8 + 3 kg

92 kg tank → 112 kg system

The stand is included only in the whole-system total.

What this calculator cannot tell you

It cannot certify a floor, shelf, dresser, aquarium stand or installation. Real weight changes with water level, displacement, salinity, temperature, tank construction and anything you leave out. Check manufacturer specifications for the tank and stand. If structural capacity is uncertain, ask a qualified professional before filling the aquarium.

Water density assumptions

The freshwater preset rounds to 1 kg/L, consistent with the U.S. Geological Survey. The editable 1.025 kg/L saltwater estimate is a common ocean-water planning value used by NOAA. Temperature and dissolved substances change real density, so use a measured or trusted value when it matters.

Aquarium weight FAQ

How much does a filled fish tank weigh?

Add the weight of the water, empty tank, substrate, hardscape, equipment and stand. Water alone is about 1 kilogram per liter or 8.33 pounds per US gallon, but the full setup depends on the components you enter.

Does this estimate include the aquarium stand?

The result includes the stand or cabinet only when you enter its weight. The calculator shows both the tank-and-contents subtotal and the whole-system total.

Is saltwater heavier than freshwater?

Usually. The saltwater preset uses an editable planning density of 1.025 kilograms per liter. Real density varies with salinity and temperature, so use a measured or trusted value when available.

Do rocks and substrate displace water?

Yes. Enter the actual water volume in the system after displacement when possible. The calculator does not automatically subtract rock or substrate volume.

Can this calculator tell me whether my floor is safe?

No. This is a planning estimate, not structural, floor-load, furniture, stand or installation approval. Check manufacturer specifications and consult a qualified professional when load safety is uncertain.
